Post-racist society, my white ass.
“You are a big country. You are the kindest country in the world. You are like a really nice apartment over a meth lab.” –Robin Williams (R.I.P.) to Canadians
Here is the recording of last night’s (2014-11-21) KNYO Memo of the Air: Good Night Radio show ready to download and keep or just play with one click.
Did you know that even today we can place Lewis and Clark’s camp latrines, because they prophylactically swallowed mercury for the syphilis they imagined they might catch by trading trinkets to Native American women in return for a little consideration of an explorin’ man’s needs? Also, Frida Lyngstad of Abba (/Funky Town/, /Fernando/, /Dancing Queen/, etc.) was among the issue of the Nazi lebensborn program. Further, NASA is about to wake up the Kuiper Belt mission robot to snap some pictures on its gravity-sling pass by Pluto, which is so far away that the radio signals sent by the robot, traveling at the speed of light, will take hours to reach Earth. Meanwhile, an old grayish-whitish man in America’s Bible Belt, startled up out of his engrossment in Fox so-called News by a noise outside, shot a milk-coffee-colored college boy dead for turning around in the driveway, paid a $500 fine for it and –it doesn’t say exactly but I think he gets to keep his gun too. Are we an interesting species, or what? Furthermore allow me to call your attention to the prison breakout scene in this week’s (originally December third 1946’s) Boston Blackie, where the prop-siren failed (!) and the sound effects operator, missing not a beat, used a slide-whistle instead, which you’ll hear warble from his own barely stifled laughter in relief that he’d thought to use it and then in shared amusement with the actors who were all simulating the prison break by shouting, stomping around and helpfully cranking the mechanical machine-gun machine because the sound effects man’s hands were occupied. Good times. Good times.
Further, here are some links to interesting not necessarily radio-useful items that I found mostly thanks to the fine websites listed to your right:
Fascinating illustrated discussion of /Interstellar/ sound design.
3-D slices view.
Sexy dance of the snake woman and the pretend-flute player.
Further sexy snakiness but slower and in German.
Apparently the Germans are really into this stuff. And who can blame them?
How to know when to be offended.
“When she asked why UVA’s rape statistics were hard to find, the dean said, ‘Because nobody wants to send their daughter to the rape school.'”
Proper fainting technique.
Click for full screen then page through these beautiful paintings of space subjects.
Click to magnify. Just fascinating. Dental care (8th floor, center)!
And the way we communicate news now.
1936 Japanese cartoon. The happy animals on their peaceful island are menaced by Mickey Mouse riding on a hook-nosed bat.
A weblog about carnival ride accidents.
Boy, golly, defoliating a victory garden sure works up an appetite. “One and two and /tamp/, /tamp/.”
Is Nan-Matol, Lost City of the Pacific, a Landing Pad for Saucer Zombies?
It’s a trap.
A proper telling-off. Hard to hear at first, but stick with it.
Russian miner’s cute fox photos. Oh, they are so cute.
Speaking of cute…
“Fluorescent orange poops.”
This is incredibly cool, but how did the ancients who lived in it refresh the air? Especially since they had to light it with fire. I don’t see any vent shafts.
Roller coaster. Uh-huh. Roller coaster. Yow. (This is a CGI mockup of a real thing that they’re starting to build now.)
