“Here comes the scream, full and round, hearty and high, a heltering sound.” -Walt Kelly

Marco here, bringing you the recording of last night’s (2022-08-19) Memo of the Air: Good Night Radio show on 107.7fm KNYO-LP Fort Bragg (CA), ready to re-enjoy:

Thanks to Hank Sims of Lost Coast Outpost here’s a page with not only the above MOTA show but also other ones going back quite a way. And thanks to the Anderson Valley Advertiser, which provided or at least alerted me to almost an hour of the above eight-hour show’s most locally relevant material without asking for anything in return. And KNYO, which does not at all consider it an insult to accept to accept a little charity now and again, so why not now? And again?

FURTHERMORE, here’s a fresh batch of not-necessarily-radio-useful but worthwhile items that I set aside for you while gathering the show together, found mostly thanks to the fine websites listed to your right:

Every time I see a really great optical illusion I think the same thing: Just as this entertainingly fools the eye, logical fallacies and emotional arguments fool our mind into believing things that are not so. With an optical illusion, you can sometimes put a finger or a straight edge or something against some part of it and see what’s going on, just as you can use evidence and reason and critical thinking skills to debunk religious/superstitious/political bullshit. And in all cases, no matter what you do or how carefully or scrupulously you construct your presentation, there are always a million people ready to take that in and continue to believe passionately and militantly in whatever their crazy focus is this week or month or year or era, not to mention their and their club’s mission is to save the world from degenerate unbelievers like you. You are always as outnumbered by loons as were the 300 of Sparta by the hordes of nose-eyebrow-ear-lip-and-nipple-pierced Xerxes, whose flights of arrows were thick enough to blot out the sun. Raise your shield of reason and fight in the shade. (via Clifford Pickover)

The development of an electrical machine gun that throws knives, spins them exactly the right speed in the air, and sticks them accurately into whatever you shine its laser dot on. Years ago I read the phrase somewhere, “a gun that shoots knives”*, and it stuck in my mind. Apparently it stuck in this man’s mind as well, very like a knife from a gun that shoots them.

The car has a great shape, but my admiration veers away from its sinister puckered robot chipmunk mouth. And even with soft tires and springs, sitting right over the back wheels is as queasy-making as right over the /front/ wheels like in a 1960s Econoline van or an old VW bus. Ideally, you really want to be in the middle of all four wheels, and if the thing has three wheels, the two side-by-side wheels should be in front and they should steer, and you should be in the middle of all three. But, except for the grille and the pasenger compartment placement, here, look how cool this is:

I’d think you’d need a /Snow Crash/ inflatable Michelin-man suit to ride this. In the illustration the guy doesn’t even have leather on, nor elbow protection. He’ll be a bloody bag of broken bones, but at least they’ll be able to identify him from his protected head. And yet, I predict that soon there’ll be a Red Bull video about attractive college kids jumping off ski jumps on things like this, twisting and flipping in the air, or riding around a roller-coaster track on one.
