A minaret of jam.

“We’re on a planet, a sphere, with a certain number of people and a certain number of resources. What is the best way for us to manage this? What stories do we need to tell ourselves and one another to make this work?” -Russell Brand

Here’s the recording of last night’s Memo of the Air: Good Night Radio show on 107.7fm KNYO-LP Fort Bragg (CA), ready for you to re-enjoy:

Thanks to Hank Sims of Lost Coast Outpost here’s a page with plenty of other ones going back quite a way. And thanks to the Anderson Valley Advertiser, which always provides about an hour of each of my Friday night shows’ most locally relevant material without asking for anything in return, going back decades. And consider tiny bravely struggling KNYO itself. See if you can find the big red donation heart. What do you suppose that might be for?

Here’s a link to my dream journal project that I restarted a couple of years ago and have been sporadically keeping up. The latest post is always on top.

FURTHERMORE, here are some not-necessarily-radio-useful but worthwhile items that I set aside for you while gathering the show together, found mostly thanks to the fine websites listed to your right.

Something that will get in and never leave. I hadn’t heard this song in years, and Thursday I woke up with it blasting in my head, then, sure enough, there it came every ten or fifteen minutes all the rest of the day. To be free of it I must give it to someone else. But you have to invite it in. Here:

Let’s learn a little about Martha and the Vandellas. First off, there was no Martha. They were Annette, Rosalind, and Gloria. Then Martha showed up and Gloria was all like, /That’s it! I’m gone!/ Something like that.

I’d be afraid someone would step on this and crunch it, but that goes for living pets too; that’s nothing new. Also it’s got all resources of the internet and what it learns about you and how to interact with you, just like your phone and teevee and toaster anymore; a /what the parrot saw/ situation. Somehow it makes me think more of the robot teddy bear companion of David in the movie /A.I./ than of the Disney-cute robots it looks and scurries around like. /Supertoys Last All Summer Long/– that was the story they started off with for /A.I./. Further, five minutes after these are out in people’s houses there’ll be a story about one saving someone’s life. “RRRowr! Reeer-rawr!” “What’s that, Dinky? Little Timmy’s fallen down the well?” REREE-vurv! “Oh! The toast is done. Thank you. /I wonder why the toaster didn’t tell me that./ Never mind, just go get my toast and bring it here.” “Vruh-VER ra-REEvruvum.” “Figure it out. Spear it on your ear-thing.” “VO-VAY!” “…No, that’s not toast, silly, that’s a dildo.” “NILL-no! VERR VERRR” “I don’t want to play now. Go away. I have to work. Go on.” Aww.

A lifelike, literally steam-powered (!) robotic hand with independently operated fingers and a three-way thumb. Even the sound of flexing is great. Imagine what further development here will mean to people who’ve lost a hand, or to robot masseurs and masseuses that will never become resentful at your master-slave relationship and twist your head off like a ketchup cork.

“I’ve been an engineer on one of the biggest laser driven inertial-confinement fusion reactors for a couple decades now and I’ll be blunt, the vast majority of fusion hype videos on the internet, or anywhere really, are hot garbage not at all worth my time. This video really impressed me though, both in its accuracy and detail, and its relative thoroughness in examination of the RFC scheme for magnetically confined fusion.” (For the short of attention span, skip ahead about 7 or 8 minutes.)

I love all of this, but you can skip to 6:40 or so, where the tiny girl jams on her giant bass guitar with Steve Vai, first in sound check, and then for the main event, and acquits herself like a pro. Think of the practice and dedication that got her there. And she’s like ten years old.

The Learning Channel is to learning as The History Channel is to history. Meaning, not. But this particular parody short, or at least the argument parts of it, is a lot like arguments that people get into and carry on for fricking months and years on the MCN Announce listserv until they’re calling each other rude names and threatening violence, each insulting the other’s inability to do any harm to /him/, in a demented text-based gnip-gnop of people miles away from each other, each fizzing and shouting at his own computer, when the purpose of the listserv is to announce yard sales and projects and lost pets and theater and radio show info and so on. You just have to not let childish angry jerks drag you down to their level. Once upon a time, Bill Murray sat back in his undershorts in a deck chair by the pool with an iced drink in his hand and said: “The more you know who you are and what you want, the less you let things upset you.”

Some fight scenes from Marvel’s Daredevil. It says these are /the best/, but they leave out the fight in the hospital, where the evil ninjas throw nurse Claire out a high window and Daredevil dives down after her, trailing one of the ninja ropes, catches her and swings them both to smash in through a lower window. Christ! I had to remember to start breathing again. And it wasn’t just the fight scenes. Daredevil was a magical show. It pushed all my buttons. They put the characters through the wringer, emotionally and physically– except Foggy, I now realize. He got mildly shot in the shoulder once, and he missed his missing friend and felt lied to and had to keep a secret. That’s comparatively nothing. Now, Karen– what they did to her, and you’re like, /Oh, poor honey. Oh, no./ But she has some real steel inside of her.
