Half man, half ant! MANT!

2022/10/22

“Ninety-nine percent of all living creatures die by being eaten alive.” -Mary Ann Tirone Smith

Here’s the recording of last night’s Memo of the Air: Good Night Radio show on 107.7fm KNYO-LP Fort Bragg (CA), ready for you to re-enjoy:

Thanks to Hank Sims of Lost Coast Outpost here’s a page with plenty of other ones going back quite a way. And thanks to the Anderson Valley Advertiser, which always provides about an hour of each of my Friday night shows’ most locally relevant material without asking for anything in return, going back decades. (This time well over an hour.) And tiny bravely struggling KNYO itself. If you can find it in /your/ corazon, find the big red donation corazon there and put twenty or more toward sorely needed replacement equipment. That would be so great. If you were never a special person before, you are a special person now. Or buy some KNYO hot sauce. (“It’s toasted!”)

Here’s a link to my dream journal project that I restarted a couple of years ago and have been keeping up– not like the old days but at least a post of several dreams each week. The latest post is always on top.

Last night’s show, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the so-called Cuban Missile Crisis, had and has new features for you to discover, as well as timely local election and health information, some poetry by Notty Bumbo, D.H. Lawrence, and David Gurney, stories by Molly Bee, David Herstle Jones, Sebastian Iturralde, Paul Modic of Laytonville, Nona Smith, Tony Bourdain, and lots more; the usual two chapters of both No More My Echoing Song by Clifford Allen Sanders and Kent Wallace’s new book, a work in progress: Mister Westerner. Speaking of whom, Kent Wallace called to recount an encounter with a bellicose Russian cheerleader in Vietnam. Andrew Scully called to cast an unflattering light on our town’s historically malodorous namesake, General Braxton Bragg, and also to list some of the sex-and-violence-related shenanigans of Ukiah’s Finest. Some corazon-related music, mostly after David Jones’ story about a corazon attack in Zihuatanejo, and, uh, like that. Corazon– why does it sound so familiar, like some kind of ethnic food… Oh! Calzone. That’s not the same thing. They’re not at all interchangeable.

ANYWAY, here are some not-necessarily-radio-useful but worthwhile items that I set aside for you while gathering the show together, found mostly thanks to the fine websites listed to your right.

Space interview with Nicole Aunapau Mann, NASA astronaut on the international space station, US Marine officer, fighter pilot, graduate of the US Naval Academy and Stanford University, and Wylacki member of the Round Valley Confederated Tribes. She’s the first American Indian woman astronaut. (20 min.)

Mant! Half man, half ant! Mant! (The whole short film. 15 min.) “Oh, Bill, if you could only listen to the man and leave the insect aside.” “Insecticide?! Where?”

Cosplay winners showcased in an arresting video style. Also: this all looks like back to normal, to me. I hope we don’t get another tidal wave of disease this year because of a huge number of people defiantly refusing their shots for anything and also not wearing a mask. Domino masks don’t count, nor would a Daredevil mask, though owl-bear or Spiderman or Rorschach masks might, depending on the fabric.

Real, actual aborted pregnancy photos. That’s not a baby. It’s not even a chicken. It isn’t screaming any more than spoiled food in your fridge is screaming. Every wanted abortion is a medically necessary abortion. People who don’t like an abortion can just not get one, and mind their own goddamn business.

You never know when your hardy band of partisan Italian anti-fascist patriots might need to hide in the forest and have a stealth camp. A stealth camp needs a stealth stove, for hot chocolate and squirrel stew and whatnot. Follow this man’s safety suggestions; you don’t want to cut your finger open with those snips.

An ad for delicious gum with no plastic in it. Though my favorite gum lately is called Painterz, from the $1.25 store. It’s a bag of big gumballs in bright colors that stain your lips. (“The lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning.”) They’re pretty good; it’s good gum. I do like gum a little stale so the first few chews are hard to do and provide some exercise and, incidentally, induce manly cheek dimples, which, with the stains, produce a dramatic Heath-Ledger-Joker effect.
